Julie Tolentino (Filipinx-Salvadoran, she/they interchangeably) is an interdisciplinary artist working in durational performance, installation, scent & object-making, texts. Her work has exhibited in the 2022 Whitney Biennial (with Ivy Kwan Arce), Participant, Inc., The Kitchen, Performance Space New York,The New Museum, Aspen Art Museum, Nevada Art Museum, Thessaloniki Biennial, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Museum of Contemporary Art - Macedonia, Commonwealth & Council, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions-LACE, Volume, Fulcrum Arts, homeLA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, The Lab (SF) amongst others. Collaborative projects include Visual AIDS Duets Book series with Kia LaBeija; Movements in Blue with the What Would An HIV Doula Do? Collective; and the Safer Sex Handbook with Cynthia Madansky.
Tolentino initiated and ran the Clit Club from 1990-2002. She is the current senior editor for the Provocations in TDR-The Drama Review (since 2012). They received a MFA as the University of California at Riverside’s Dean’s Distinguished Fellow in Experimental Choreography in 2020.
Recent awards include the Joyce Award (2023) and a Foundation for Contemporary Art -Emergency Grant (2023); USArtist International (2022); Anonymous was a Woman and the Herb Alpert/UCROSS Residency Prize (2021); Queer|Art Sustained Artist Recognition (2020); Herb Alpert/MacDowell Fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Art - Performance Grant (2019) - amongst other support since the 1990s.
Tolentino was the 2021-2022 Scholar-in-Residence at NYU Steinhardt; the Alma Hawkins Chair in the World Arts & Cultures Department at UCLA, Winter 2022 and
joined Cal Arts in 2022 in the School of Art as regular faculty.
She/They are an artist/maker/contributor with Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles and a 2022-2024 Queer|Art Mentor.
